Every now and then, I miss something that’s packed with meat and dairy. Chopped Cheese Sandwich is a perfect example of that. If you’re not familiar with the Chopped Cheese Sandwich, it is similar to a Philly Cheesesteak, with some very key differences. Philly Cheesesteaks use thinly sliced beef, whereas a Chopped Cheese uses ground beef. Further, most Philly Cheesesteaks have the ingredients cooked with the thinly sliced beef, like onions, peppers and mushrooms. With a Chopped Cheese Sandwich, ground beef and onions are cooked together, while the bread is topped with a dressing, lettuce and tomato. Now, in most places, you can make changes to both sandwiches, save for making them vegan.
I hope to eventually be able to make a Vegan Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, but until then, this yummy Chopped Cheese is going to be great.
Vegan Chopped Cheese Sandwich (serves 2)

- 1 – 12 oz Plant-Based Ground, thawed
- or your favorite ground beef alternative
- 1 large White Onion
- 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 6 slices Vegan American Cheese
- 1 Sourdough Sub Roll or Sub Roll of Choice, toasted
- 1/4 cup Vegan Mayo
- 1/4 cup Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Oregano
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 cup Lettuce, shredded
- 1 large tomato, sliced
Let’s Get It Together!
- Start by toasting the Sub Roll, in an oven. Preheat your oven to 400 F, open the sub roll and place directly onto an oven rack in the middle of the oven.
- While the Sub Roll is toasting in the oven, start cooking the Plant Based Ground, in a medium skillet over medium heat. As the Ground is starting to cook, thinly slice the onion, into half rounds and add to cooking Ground.
- Cook Plant Based Ground and Onions until the onions begin to caramelize, roughly 10 minutes.
- While you wait for the Ground and Onions to cook, check your Sub Roll in the oven, remove the roll if it is toasted to your liking. If the Roll is not toasted to your liking, leave it in longer.
- Still, while you’re waiting for the Ground and onions to cook, grab the vegan mayo, ketchup, oregano, and garlic powder. Mix together.
- After 10 minutes, add the Vegan Cheese Slices, cover and allow to melt some, about 2 minutes.
- Remove lid, and with your spatula, chop everything together. Cover again for 2 minutes.
- Turn the heat off and leave the Ground, Onion and Cheese mixture covered, while you get the Sub Roll ready. Take the Sub Roll, spread on your Mayo Mixture onto both sides of the roll. Add Shredded Lettuce and Tomatoes to the bottom of the Sub Roll. Then take the Ground and spread over the Sub Roll.
- Close the Sub Roll, slice in half. Serve with a salad.
Enjoy!
